Bookbinding Workshops:

Due to the Coronavirus crisis all scheduled workshops have now, unfortunately, been cancelled.  They will, however, be re-scheduled once the situation improves and those who have already booked will be given first option to re-book.  I hope you are all safe and well out there!

Paper Marbling
Saturday March 14th

A day of decorative paper making. The morning session will focus on how to print Japanese-style ‘Suminagashi’ marbled paper.  The afternoon will concentrate on traditional paper marbling techniques using acrylic paint on a size bath.

Maximum class size of 5 students.

No previous experience necessary and suitable for beginners.  All materials are provided
Price:  £75.00

Open House

Saturday, April 18th

An opportunity to bring along a current bookbinding project that you’re working on or are about to start.  This could, for instance, include: repair work, case binding, leather binding, box making, decorative paper or leather work, gold tooling etc – anything goes!

Alternatively, if you’re new to bookbinding this would be a great opportunity to learn the basics by completing a few simple exercises in paper folding, cutting, sewing and case making.

Maximum class size of 5 students.

Victorian Photo Album
Saturday, May 23rd
Photo Albums require a specific binding structure which provides space for the insertion of photos, documents, cuttings etc.  This workshop will feature the classic Victorian style of photo album using cloth guards with pages made from thick board – an unusual binding style with no sewing but lots of gluing!
Class size restricted to only 5 students.  All materials provided.

Leather Paring
Saturday, June 13th.
Leather paring is one the most difficult bookbinding skills to learn.  This workshop will take students through the process of sharpening, stropping and using paring knives to maximum effect.  We will then make a full-leather cased pocket note book using our newly acquired paring skills.

Class size restricted to only 5 students.  All materials provided.

 Bindery Hire:

Bindery Hire:

In addition to attending Workshops, bookbinding students can also hire the bindery to work on their own projects or obtain assistance with more specialised work.  Two levels of hire are available:  Standard Bindery Hire comes with basic technical assistance and is only suitable for students with existing experience and able to work on their own projects.   Supported Bindery Hire includes full technical assistance and practical support.  This level of hire is more suitable for beginners or for students who require specialised tuition on advanced techniques.

Standard Bindery Hire:

£20 per day or £90 for a 5-day block booking.

Bindery Hire with support and technical assistance:

£50 per day or £225 for a 5-day block booking.

Personal, one-to-one tuition can also be arranged.

  • Block bookings needn’t be on consecutive days and can include weekends.
  • Hire rate includes use of all equipment, handtools and most materials except for leather, certain papers and all marbled or decorated papers.
  • Each day runs from 10:00 to 5:00.
