Bookbinding Workshops:  Summer 2019

The following bookbinding workshops and events will be held on Saturdays from 10:00 to 5:00 at the Courtyard Studios Bindery in Irvine.  The bindery is fully equipped with work stations for up to 6 students.  The Courtyard Studios are easy to reach by road or rail with ample free parking

Open House

Saturday, July 20th

An opportunity to bring along a current bookbinding project that you’re working on or are about to start.  This could, for instance, include: repair work, case binding, leather binding, box making, decorative paper or leather work, gold tooling etc – anything goes!

Alternatively, if you’re new to bookbinding this would be a great opportunity to learn the basics by completing a few simple exercises in paper folding, cutting, sewing and case making.

Maximum class size of 5 students.


Creative Edge Decoration

Saturday,  August 17th

This workshop will be a combination of demonstration and hands-on practical sessions.  A variety of decorative techniques will be covered, including:  graphite, sprinkled gold, self-coloured, transfer print, gold tooling and mixed media.  Students will create a batch of sample edges on supplied bookblocks which can then be used as a reference for future projects.

Maximum class size of 5 students.  All materials provided.

How to make Finishing Tools

September 07-08

This workshop is an introduction to the traditional process of hand-cutting brass finishing tools and will include: how to fabricate the blank, accurately reverse and transfer images to metal and how to cut and engrave brass with files, saws, punches, gravers and chisels. Students will also be shown how to polish finished tools and how to securely fit hardwood handles.

This 2-day event is part of the Designer Bookbinder’s Masterclass Series and bookings must be  made directly with DB.  Further details are on the DB website:

Saturday, October 12th
This is a traditional German style of case binding characterised by the use of protective leather strips on the head and tail with the remainder covered in a decorative paper.  This unique style of binding makes use of thin boards and precise, tight squares (margin between pages and boards) producing a distinctive, elegant  appearance. 

Maximum class size of only 5 students.  All materials provided.

In addition to attending Workshops, bookbinding students can also hire the bindery to work on their own projects or obtain assistance with more specialised work.  Two levels of hire are available:  Standard Bindery Hire comes with basic technical assistance and is only suitable for students with existing experience and able to work on their own projects.   Supported Bindery Hire includes full technical assistance and practical support.  This level of hire is more suitable for beginners or for students who require specialised tuition on advanced techniques.

Standard Bindery Hire:

£20 per day or £90 for a 5-day block booking.

Bindery Hire with support and technical assistance:

£50 per day or £225 for a 5-day block booking.

Personal, one-to-one tuition can also be arranged.

  • Block bookings needn’t be on consecutive days and can include weekends.
  • Hire rate includes use of all equipment, handtools and most materials except for leather, certain papers and all marbled or decorated papers.
  • Each day runs from 10:00 to 5:00.
  • Monthly or longer rates are also available on a discounted basis.
